BIS Delegation Visit to Bengaluru Explores Machinery Safety Applications

India

On 6 and 7 September 2022, a delegation of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) visited the companies Festo India and Bharat Fritz Werner (BFW) in Bengaluru. The experts exchanged views on the implementation of machinery safety standards and solutions. The delegation visit once again underlined the importance of the topic for the Indo-German Working Group on Quality Infrastructure.

Industrial machinery is becoming increasingly complex due to advances in automation, communication, and artificial intelligence. Adequate protective measures are consequently critical for the safety of personnel and the environment. Emergency stops, light curtains and interlocks are examples of these. International machinery safety standards not only make machinery safer, but also create new business opportunities and open new market segments.

Company visits provided valuable insights on aspects of machinery safety

Festo India and BFW presented the various machinery safety practices used in their companies. They further explained the EU Machinery Directive’s criteria for exports to the European Union and the safety solutions. BIS and the two companies also discussed applicable standards and conformity assessment procedures. The exchanges during the BIS delegation visits enhanced the mutual understanding of machinery safety approaches on both sides.

Delegation visit deepened cooperation on machinery safety

For many years, the Indo-German Working Group on Quality Infrastructure has been working on the important topic of machinery safety. The visit of BIS officers to Festo India and BFW in Bengaluru deepened this collaboration. It was organised by the Global Project Quality Infrastructure (GPQI) in cooperation with the German Mechanical Engineering Industry Association (VDMA).
