Quality Infrastructure for Electromobility: Safe and Sustainable Micromobility

In 2021, the global micromobility market was valued at USD 49.3 billion and is projected to grow to USD 186.2 billion by 2030. In Mexico, demand for micromobility alternatives has risen significantly, with a 220% increase in bicycle usage following the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the lack of regulation for the design and use of new micromobility modes has introduced safety risks for users and bystanders, potentially increasing traffic accidents.

The fact sheet “Quality Infrastructure for Electromobility: Safe and Sustainable Micromobility” addresses these challenges by outlining key international, European, and US standards and regulations for conventional bicycles, e-bikes, e-scooters, e-mopeds, and electric motorcycles. By comparing these practices with Mexico's quality infrastructure (QI), it offers recommendations to strengthen QI and support the safe and sustainable growth of micromobility. This publication was developed within the German-Mexican Dialogue on Quality Infrastructure, led by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) and the Mexican Ministry of Economy, as part of a bilateral collaboration on electromobility standards, certification, and technical regulation.
