India is one of the leading automotive manufacturing countries in the world with end-to-end capabilities for design, development and manufacturing of all kinds of vehicles. Ranked 6th in the world, it manufactures approximately 24 million vehicles of which 3.6 million vehicles are exported. India is the world’s number one market for two-wheelers, number three for the passenger car market, and number five for the commercial vehicle market.

The study "Automotive and Component Trade with India" gives an overview of the regulatory landscape in the automotive sector in India. For example: How are emissions standards developed in India? How does the homologation process work in India? Based on interviews with industry representatives, it informs about challenges regarding technical market access in India. The study provides recommendations on how to address these challenges. Thereby, it contributes to facilitating trade between India and Germany, and boosting local manufacturing as supported by initiatives such as ‘Make in India’.

The study was conducted in collaboration with the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA).
